The Fungal Body :: by Robert Roberson

Most fungi are made up of tube-like cells called hyphae. Hyphae grow, branch, and divide, giving rise to a complex network of cells—i.e., the fungal body or mycelium.

This image shows cells of the common mold Neurospora crassa, viewed in a frozen-hydrated state with a cryo-scanning electron microscope.

The image is part of a collection created by ASU cell biologist Robert Roberson. The collection has appeared in multiple galleries throughout the Phoenix area. Read more about Roberson's microscope art in "The art of life."
