Fences and borders

Richard Lerman is a sound and video artist who teaches in the department of Interdisciplinary Arts and Performance at ASU's West campus. He and installation artist Mona Higuchi collaborated on a new piece titled "Fences/Borders-USA/Mexico." The work is part of an exhibition called "Human Trafficking" on display through December 2007 at the Museum of World Culture in Gothenborg, Sweden.

The installation includes three elements: a 23-foot by eight-foot map of the entire US/Mexico border made from USGS satellite imagery and GIS information; a video Lerman recorded at four border fence locations in Arizona and California; and an 18-foot coil of spliced bougainvillea (looks like razor wire) that is suspended in the space. Lerman also fashioned the coil to behave like a loudspeaker.
